Sleep Apnoea & Snoring

Specialist assessment and treatment for sleep-related breathing disorders

Sleep apnoea and snoring are common conditions that can affect sleep quality, daytime energy and long-term health. A proper assessment helps identify the underlying cause and determine the most appropriate treatment.

Common Symptoms

Loud snoring

Interrupted breathing during sleep

Daytime fatigue

Morning headaches

Poor concentration

What Causes Sleep Apnoea?

Sleep apnoea occurs when the airway narrows or collapses during sleep, leading to reduced airflow or pauses in breathing. This may be related to nasal obstruction, throat anatomy or other structural factors.

Specialist Assessment

Assessment may include clinical examination, airway evaluation and sleep studies where appropriate.

Treatment Options

Treatment depends on the underlying cause and severity and may include lifestyle measures, CPAP therapy or targeted procedures to improve airway function.

Sleep Apnoea & Snoring FAQs

What is the difference between snoring and sleep apnoea?

Snoring is the sound produced by airway vibration during sleep and may occur without any health consequences. Obstructive sleep apnoea (OSA) is a medical condition in which the airway repeatedly collapses during sleep, causing pauses in breathing, oxygen drops, and fragmented sleep. Loud snoring is often a symptom of OSA, but not all snorers have sleep apnoea.

What are the warning signs of sleep apnoea?

Common warning signs include loud or disruptive snoring, witnessed pauses in breathing during sleep, waking with a choking sensation, excessive daytime sleepiness, morning headaches, difficulty concentrating, and frequent night-time urination.

How is sleep apnoea diagnosed?

Diagnosis is confirmed with a sleep study (polysomnography or a home sleep test). Dr Prasad will examine your airway clinically first, then arrange appropriate sleep testing based on the findings and your symptoms.

What treatment options are available for sleep apnoea in Singapore?

Treatment depends on the severity and cause. Options include CPAP (Continuous Positive Airway Pressure) therapy, weight management, dental devices, and in selected cases, targeted surgical procedures to address specific airway obstruction such as nasal blockage, enlarged tonsils, or soft palate collapse.

Can snoring be cured with surgery?

For some patients, targeted surgery can significantly reduce or eliminate snoring. The appropriate procedure depends on where in the airway the obstruction lies. Dr Prasad will assess your airway anatomy before recommending any surgical option.
